Rolls-Royce, the British manufacturer of luxury cars and aircraft engines, has unveiled its latest innovations in the field of aviation; It dazzled the world with the world’s fastest all-electric aircraft.
Dubbed the Spirit of Innovation, the aircraft set a new speed record, reaching a top speed of 387.4 mph, or 132 mph, faster than the current record, during a 1.9 mile test flight. It took 11 minutes in total.
The data has now been submitted to the International Federation of Aviation, which controls global aviation records.
Warren East, Rolls-Royce CEO, said: “After the world focused on the need for action at the Climate Summit (COP26), this is another milestone that will help make zero-emissions aircraft a reality. reality, and supports our ambitions to deliver the technological breakthroughs society needs to decarbonize via air, land and sea transportation.”
The British company stressed that the “spirit of innovation” can currently fly for more than 30 minutes on a single charge, but it expects to develop a vehicle in the future, capable of doing 100 miles on a single charge.
It is worth noting that the test flight took place from the British Ministry of Defense’s Boscombe Down experimental aircraft test site on November 16, during which he flew the plane; Phil Odell, Director of Flight Operations at Rolls-Royce, clocked a speed of 387.4 mph, 132 mph faster than the current record set by a Siemens air-powered electronic aircraft in 2017.
According to the company, the “spirit of innovation” is powered by a 400-kilowatt electric motor and an energy-intensive 6,480-cell propulsion battery, which is large enough to charge 7,500 smartphones. This system enables the fans to spin at 2,200 rpm, twice the speed of Washing machine on high spin.
To ensure the huge battery stays cool, the plane is fitted with thermal protection made of Portuguese cork; It is the same cork used in bottling wine.
For his part, Mr. Odell stressed: “It is a momentous occasion to fly the plane at such incredible speeds, and to believe that we have broken the world record for all-electric flight. “This is the highlight of his career and a great achievement for the entire team,” he added.
Rolls-Royce believes that the project could pave the way for future technologies, and even flying taxis in the near future.
In a statement, she said, in addition to this amazing technical achievement, the project and world records provided important data on future electric power, propulsion systems for all urban air transportation, and hybrid electric passenger aircraft.
