Meghan and Prince Harry attended the popular youth therapy podcast to celebrate World Mental Health Day. While Meghan discussed how COVID-19 has impacted the world and brought people with mental health issues closer in their experiences, she spoke about the impact the online world can have on real life.

The Duchess highlighted that most people have spent more time online than outside after the coronavirus outbreak and the following lockdown: “Not just for a younger age group, but for everyone, especially for your point of view during COVID when you are not in school are then you are on your devices or more online, right?

“And there’s a lot of vulnerability there that I think so many people experience.

“Yes, it’s a great way to connect, but it’s also a place where there are a lot of disconnects.”

Meghan went on to say she became a troll target in 2019.

The Duchess went on to explain the effects that online hatred can have on people: “I can also speak personally. I was told that in 2019 I was the most trolled person in the whole world – male or female.

“Now, eight months of that, I wasn’t even visible, I was on maternity leave with the baby.

“But what could be made and produced is almost insurmountable, it’s so big that you can’t even imagine what it feels like.

“I don’t care if you are 15 or 25 when people say things about you that are not true, what it means to your mental and emotional health is so harmful.

“From my point of view and for the work we do, this is from my personal experience and being able to talk to people and understand that our experience is unique to us and obviously can be very different from that that people can experience day-to-day, it is still a human experience and that is universal.

“We all know what it feels like to have our feelings hurt, we all know what it feels like to be isolated, and I think that’s why the work you guys do here is so important.”
