Senate Republicans announced Thursday that they plan to enlist Twitter manager Jack Dorsey for statements about social media companies preventing users from sharing explosive reports on Hunter Biden that came out this week.
They plan to summon Dorsey to appear before the judicial committee days before election day.
“We saw Big Tech, we saw how Twitter and Facebook actively interfered in these elections, as there is no precedent in the history of our country,” scolded Texan Senator Ted Cruz on Thursday when the panel was on its fourth day met from hearings on Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett.
Jack Dorsey, CEO of Twitter, has been accused by Republicans of political bias for allegedly censoring a news report alleging corruption by Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden
“This is an election meddling and we are 19 days before an election,” said Cruz after the social network blocked links to the New York Post article alleging Biden’s corruption in Ukraine.
He said he was prevented himself from telling another story about Hunter Biden on Thursday.
Cruz, Judiciary Committee chairman Lindsey Graham, and Missouri Senator Josh Hawley said the panel would vote on issuing the subpoena on October 20, with the plan to Dorsey on Friday, October 23, a few days before election day bring its members.
Cruz said the Senate Judiciary Committee would vote for Dorsey’s subpoena next Tuesday to testify late next week and “explain why Twitter is using corporate power to silence the press.”
Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) (L) and Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said the Justice Committee will summon Jack Dorsey from Twitter as they have made efforts to prevent users from sharing an explosive story about Hunter Biden divide
Twitter said the link “may be unsafe” and could contain stolen personal information
GOP senators feared users would not be able to share information from one of the largest edition papers in the country
Twitter’s Jack Dorsey apologized for not providing “context”.
“The Senate Judiciary Committee wants to know what the hell is going on,” he said.
‘Twitter and Facebook as well as big tech millionaires cannot censor political speeches and actively interfere in the election. They are doing that right now. ‚
Republican Senator Josh Hawley separately announced that he had sent letters to Dorsey and Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg asking them to appear before his Justice Subcommittee on Crime and Terrorism.
The hearing will “look into potential campaign law violations” to assist Biden in blocking the item.
Dorsey apologized Thursday for the company’s swift action, for which he had no adequate explanation.
Twitter initially said the story violated guidelines on “hacked materials” and “personal and private information”.
‘Our communication about our actions on the NYPost article hasn’t been great. And blocking URL sharing via tweet or DM with no context why we’re blocking: unacceptable, ”said Dorsey.
He then linked a company statement that the link was restricted because the story shared “personal and private information”.
President Donald Trump called it “so terrible” that they “wrote down” the story and threatened to repeal “Section 230” of a communications law that protects companies from liability for information posted by third parties on their websites.
The story was based on information provided by Donald Trump’s attorney Rudy Giuliani, according to the Post. A computer repair shop owner said a man he couldn’t identify brought three computers to his shop for repair last fall. Then he made a copy and made it available to the FBI and Giuliani’s lawyer.
The post has posted business emails as well as photos of Biden and also contains explicit information.
The Post’s story aims to expose corrupt dealings by Biden and his son Hunter Biden in Ukraine.
The newspaper alleged that the former vice president, who was in charge of US policy towards Ukraine, took action to help his son, who served on the board of controversial Ukrainian energy company Burisma from 2014-2017.
The newspaper’s source of information raised questions, however.
It cited records of a drive that allegedly had been copied from a computer allegedly abandoned by Hunter Biden and given Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani to the Post.
Allegations were also made in the report about Joe Biden’s actions in Ukraine, which are contradicting the records.
Both Facebook and Twitter, wary of fake news campaigns, said they had taken measures out of caution regarding the item and its procurement.
Twitter released a statement on the decision on Wednesday evening
“This is part of our standard process to reduce the spread of misinformation,” said Facebook spokesman Andy Stone.
The role of Giuliani, who has repeatedly put forward unproven and ill-sourced conspiracy theories about the Bidens and Ukraine, has also hoisted flags.
The Biden campaign denied the allegations of corruption in the report but did not deny the accuracy of the underlying materials, mainly emails between Hunter Biden and business associates.
Trump, who follows Biden in polls 19 days before the presidential election, blew up the two social media giants on Wednesday.
“So horrible that Facebook and Twitter wrote the story of” Smoking Gun “emails about Sleepy Joe Biden and his son Hunter in @NYPost,” Trump wrote on Twitter.
Graham complained by referencing information that was available in 2016 without being blocked. “The Steele dossier was everywhere, they never blocked it, all allegations about Russian collusion and Trump and every other idea that Trump could have done something bad, nobody blocked that,” he said.
