SAO PAULO – This Friday (16), João Doria (PSDB), governor of the state of São Paulo, said that next Wednesday (21) is the deadline for the Ministry of Health to define whether the CoronaVac vaccine, developed by the Butantan Institute, in partnership with the Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinovac, will enter the list of vaccines of the National Immunization Program (PNI), linked to the Ministry of Health.
On that date, Doria, Jean Gorinchteyn, state health secretary, and Dimas Covas, director of the Butantan Institute, should meet at 10 am with Eduardo Pazuello, minister of health, in Brasilia, to reach a conclusion on the participation of the sponsored vaccine by the state of São Paulo in the federal program
“The deadline for the Ministry of Health’s definition of CoronaVac will be October 21st. On Monday, the results of phase three will be consolidated and São Paulo wants to share the vaccine with other Brazilian states, ”said the governor during a press conference at Palácio dos Bandeirantes.
“Butantan has been, for 30 years, the largest supplier of vaccines to the Ministry of Health. Than depending on the government of São Paulo, we will continue with this tradition of more than three decades”, said Doria.
Right after that first meeting, a meeting with Antonio Barra Torres, president of the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) is scheduled for 1 pm.
The governor also stated that, whatever the position of the Ministry of Health regarding the inclusion of CoronaVac in the PNI, the state of São Paulo will vaccinate its population with the drug. And this vaccination will be mandatory in the state, excluding only people who receive medical discharge for not receiving it.
“São Paulo is going to vaccinate and this is guaranteed. It is also necessary to say that here in São Paulo vaccination will be mandatory. It is not possible to imagine, in the middle of a pandemic, vaccinating only a few and not vaccinating others. The virus continues if people are not protected ”, added the governor.
Chinese vaccine left out?
Last Tuesday (14), the presentation of the vaccination schedule against Covid-19 in the country, which will start in April 2021, listed only the Oxford vaccine, which is being developed in partnership with the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation ( Fiocruz), and the doses provided by the international consortium Covax Facility, leaving out the Butantan / Sinovac vaccine.
After the announcement of the portfolio, the São Paulo State Secretary of Health was unhappy with the decision.
Gorinchteyn said he believed that “vaccines are not being treated republicanly by the Ministry of Health”. “Everyone present at the meeting understood the same way. The São Paulo vaccine is being ignored, ”he said in an interview with the newspaper Newspaper.
