Melburnianer I traveled to bars and restaurants tonight to celebrate the four month festival Coronavirus Lockdown lifting at midnight.
“I’m now officially declaring Melbourne restaurants open,” said Angus and Bon steakhouse owner Liam Ganley as he cut a ribbon to spread cheers, confetti and applause.
The official Facebook page of the Chapel Street Precinct written at 11 p.m. that it was “already buzzing”.
“People who flick their horns and pretend they’re giving each other high fives (COVIDSafe version).
“The future is exciting.”
9News reporter Elisabeth Moss said champagne is on hold for some companies that are ready to open their doors.
“The venue we spoke to says they already have the COVID capacity tonight. That means that in many of them at midnight 20 people are sitting some distance away, having dinner and then drinking again, ”she said.
Mr. Ganley previously told 9news.com.au that customer reaction was “insane”.
“We have been flooded since yesterday,” he said.
“We’re just trying to juggle everything. Everyone is just fighting to get a table. “
Hotels and restaurants are still subject to strict customer restrictions and must comply with COVID-safe regulations.
Retailers across town also greeted loyal customers as the clock struck midnight.
Kmart plans to stay open 24 hours and Spotlight doesn’t plan to close until 8 p.m.
At Chapter One, a women’s clothing boutique in Ivanhoe, northeast Melbourne, family and friends gathered to sip champagne, have a drink, and share a few snacks.
“It’s been a long time since your best customers didn’t come through the door,” Jacqui Bonnett told 9News.
“We really missed her.”
