Allstate – the second largest personal insurer in the United States and the largest public company – tested the Ceramic Shield screen for the new iPhone 12 models and found it to be the most durable smartphone screen we’ve ever tested, but not unbreakable.
The insurer tested the new iPhones with breakable drop tests, which involve dropping the devices onto a rough pavement from a height of six feet. Apple said its new ceramic shield technology provides up to four times the protection from drops on the screen compared to previous models. In tests, phones were dropped face down, back, and sides.
According to CNN, the company Allstate discovered that the flat design of the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro appears to improve the durability of phones when dropped on the back sides. But this did not mean that either model was shatter-resistant.
IPhone 12 Pro performed worse than iPhone 12 in terms of glass damage. The company found that the iPhone 12 Pro shattered when it fell on its back, while the iPhone 12 revealed almost no damage.
When the iPhone 12 Pro was dropped face down, the lower half of the shield screen cracked, while the iPhone 12 suffered only small cracks.
Neither of the damage to either device was catastrophic nor does it appear to affect the phone’s functionality.
Allstate concluded that both devices performed “much better” than the previous iPhone 11 model, and outperformed any other smartphone previously tested.
“The front of the porcelain shield is a huge improvement,” said Jason Siciliano, vice president and global creative director at Allstate Protection Plans, according to CNN.
