A Swiss court issued a suspended prison sentence on two senior officials of a Swiss Islamic group for spreading propaganda in support of the terrorist “Al-Qaeda” organization, after they were acquitted earlier.

The Swiss Federal Criminal Court sentenced Nicolas Blancho, president of the Swiss Islamic Central Council, to 15 months in prison, and Abdelaziz Qasim Ely, the media spokesman for the Council, 18 months, with a suspension of execution for both of them for a period of three years.

The prosecutors had originally indicted the two men and another official of the Swiss Islamic Council in 2017 over video clips posted on the Internet two years ago, which included interviews with leaders of the Al-Nusra Front, which is linked to Al-Qaeda.

The indictment says that the videos were subsequently used on the Internet as propaganda for “Al Qaeda.”

Prosecutors said that the authors of these videos did not distance themselves from the activities of Al-Qaeda in Syria in those videos released in 2015.

The Islamic Council had previously said that the aim of that clip was to shed light on a troubled region and not to glorify extremists.

An earlier acquittal ruling was issued against both Blancho and Ellie, but the Federal Court overturned the two judgments last March and decided to retry them.
