“Molave” is the strongest typhoon to hit Vietnam in over 20 years, and at least 50 people are said to have lost their lives in landslides as a result of the extreme weather.

The Red Cross writes on it

– Last night, a landslide took the lives of at least 50 people, the organization writes.

The news agency AP writes that eight have been confirmed dead, while 42 are missing after several landslides. One of the landslides occurred in Tra Van in Quang Nam province, while in Tra Leng several houses were buried in another landslide.

“This is one of our biggest relief operations ever,” Vietnamese Red Cross President Thi Xuan Thu Nguyen said in a news release Wednesday, according to Reuters.

Typhoon “Molave” hit land just south of the city of Da Nang, as a category 2 hurricane with wind speeds of up to 165 kilometers per hour in addition to large amounts of rain.

Vietnam has still not recovered from the floods that have ravaged the country in recent weeks, and which have so far cost over 130 lives. In addition, dozens of people are still missing and over one million have had their homes destroyed.

– The Vietnamese people are tough, but this is some of the worst destruction we have seen in many areas, says the Red Cross-Nguyen about the flood.

The organization fears more than 150,000 are in immediate danger of starvation and food shortages as a result of the floods.
