CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – A family in our area is hoping to send a clear message to the public to remain vigilant after losing a loved one to COVID-19.

Angel McCaley, 36, died of complications from the virus on Saturday, her family said. They tell WSAZ that McCaley was a diabetic and a frontline worker. They say she started showing symptoms of COVID-19 after receiving her first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

“I kept telling her, ‘you probably had it before you got the vaccine and you didn’t know it’ and every day she would have a different symptom,” said Kimberly Scott, McCaley’s mother.

McCaley worked in a long-term care facility as a certified nursing assistant, dealing with the pandemic head-on from the very beginning.

“Every day she would call me and tell me they had another case and I would tell her to take a vacation and stay home for a few days so she didn’t catch it,” Scott said. to the WSAZ, “and she said ‘no, I don’t leave my clients to someone else. ”

After showing symptoms, McCaley went for a checkup. Her mother said while in the doctor’s office, passed out and was taken to hospital. It was there that doctors found out that she not only tested positive for COVID-19, but was also diagnosed with pneumonia. A few days later, she suffered a stroke and died.

“She’s going to be with us in spirit, sure, but there’s just a lot, we’ve all lost in a lot,” said Nicole Breckenridge, McCaley’s cousin. “When we think of a person, you know, we don’t think of someone like Angel who dies at 36.”

McCaley has left many family members behind, including his two daughters, Halo and Kamani, who are only 7 and 17 years old.

“Kamani has had 17 years living with her and Halo for a good seven years, but they will miss them as they grow older. (Kamani) is preparing to graduate this year, so his mother won’t be able to be there to witness it, ”Breckenridge said. “We never imagined living without (Angel).”

McCaley’s family said they want people to take the virus seriously, hoping to spare other families from the same kind of heartache.

“Understand that this COVID is not child’s play. This is serious and you need to make sure you take all precautions to address it because we have lost someone we love, ”said Breckenridge. “We just want the community to know this is serious and make sure they take the necessary action, wear your mask. I see so many people in Charleston without a mask, and it’s ridiculous. You don’t just protect yourself, you protect us.

WSAZ has contacted the Kanawha-Charleston Department of Health regarding symptoms after receiving the COVID vaccine:

“We are saddened to learn of the loss of someone to COVID-19. This is why vaccinations are imperative. In general, people should wait until they have recovered from COVID-19 before receiving the COVID-19 vaccine, ”said Dr. Sherri Young. “Full immunity is not achieved until two weeks after the second dose of COVID-19 vaccine. Even after being vaccinated, everyone should continue to stay six feet from other people, wear their masks, and wash their hands frequently. ”

Dr Young also said the data shows that the vaccine can be safely given to people who have already had COVID-19. However, if a person currently has COVID-19 and is showing symptoms, they recommend waiting until the person has fully recovered. They said this recommendation applies to any vaccine, including both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.

The family say there will be a public screening from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday for Angel. They encourage all friends to drop by.
