After working for 74 years, Alitalia bid farewell to the world...

Thursday evening closed a chapter in the history of the Italian airline industry, when the last flight of the long-suffering Alitalia company arrived in Rome.

Flight number AZ01586 landed at Rome-Fiumiciano Airport in the Italian capital at 11:23 pm on Thursday (21:23 GMT), after taking off from the island of Sardinia, where it was slightly behind schedule.

The Italian news agency ANSA reported that the flight was almost full, with 180 passengers on board. With her arrival, the company no longer exists after a 74-year history.

Alitalia was founded in 1947 and for decades the brand has been associated with Italy’s post-war economic boom.

The first flight of the new Italian state airline, “Italy Trasporto Aero”, is scheduled to take off on Friday.

The new airline is seen as a successor to Alitalia, but the Italian government and the European Commission hope the new airline will completely break with Alitalia’s financially troubled past.

Last September, the European Commission approved Italian Trasporto Aero and gave it another boost by making it irresponsible to repay 900 million euros ($1 billion) in illegal government aid received by its predecessor in 2017.

The new company will start operations with 52 aircraft. This year, it will employ up to 2,950 people, while Alitalia was employing 10,000 people
