Russia’s permanent representative to international organizations in Vienna, Mikhail Ulyanov, considered that the seventh round of negotiations on reviving the nuclear agreement with Iran had begun successfully.
Ulyanov said, in a tweet published on Monday evening: “The meeting of the joint committee of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action has ended. The participants agreed to take immediate steps later in the seventh round of negotiations, which began successfully enough.”
The Coburg Hotel, the traditional site of the negotiations, will host a meeting at the level of political directors of the Joint Committee on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action for the nuclear agreement, after informal consultations took place Saturday and Sunday in preparations for the resumption of the negotiating process.
The new round of negotiations became the seventh of its kind and the first after the current Iranian President, Ebrahim Raisi, took office in August 2021.
On the eve of the new round, Ulyanov said: “We have a positive determination in the sense that every effort must be made to successfully complete the negotiations, because the alternative for this ranges from bad to very bad. The chances of reaching an agreement still exist, but tomorrow it is hoped in the first place to listen to a position Our Iranian partners are in the seventh round.”
Prior to that, from April to June this year, Vienna hosted 6 rounds of negotiations under the auspices of the European Union to save the agreement on the Iranian nuclear program in light of the United States’ withdrawal from it in 2018 during the term of its former president, Donald Trump, who imposed painful sanctions on the Iranian side, to respond to the latter reducing its commitments under the deal since 2019.
The negotiations took place officially between Iran on the one hand and Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany on the other hand, while the United States participated in the dialogue without engaging in any direct contacts with the Iranian side.
Tehran refuses to negotiate directly with the Biden administration before lifting sanctions, while Washington insists on the need to advance the principle of step for step.
