Commenting on the tension in relations between Beirut and Riyadh, Lebanese President Michel Aoun pointed out that he was insulted by a Saudi journalist, but no action was taken against him at the time.
“When a Saudi journalist insulted me on the air, no action was taken against him,” Aoun said, in an interview with Qatar’s Al-Jazeera channel today, Monday.
Aoun did not clarify the identity of the journalist, but he also stated in his speech: “We want the best and best relations with Saudi Arabia and the Gulf countries.”
On October 29, the Saudi government announced that it had summoned its ambassador to Lebanon to consult with giving the Lebanese ambassador to the Kingdom 48 hours to leave, against the backdrop of the diplomatic crisis between Riyadh and Beirut, related to statements by the Lebanese Minister of Information, George Kordahi, who said in a recorded interview to the “Parliament of the People” program. On Al-Jazeera, in response to a question about his position on what is happening in Yemen: “A people are defending themselves, are they attacking anyone? .. In my view, this Yemeni war is absurd and must stop.”
Qardahi considered that “the Houthis are defending themselves in the face of external aggression,” so one of the attendees asked him: “Do you consider that the UAE and Saudi Arabia are assaulting Yemen?” He replied: “Certainly, there is an attack, not because they are Saudi Arabia or the UAE, but because there has been an attack that has been going on for 8 years, and what you cannot implement in two or three years, you will not be able to implement in 8 years.”
The UAE, Bahrain and Kuwait have taken similar steps, and this diplomatic tension threatens to exacerbate the economic crisis that Lebanon is currently going through.
