Jordan’s Prime Minister Omar Al Razzaz announced sweeping measures to tackle the coronavirus pandemic, including restrictions on flights, the closure of schools and the banning of public gatherings.

Kindergartens, nurseries, schools, universities, colleges, training institutions and educational institutes will be closed from Sunday, for two weeks.

Flights to and from the kingdom will be reduced on Monday with all flights suspended from Tuesday until further notice. This does not apply to cargo flights, the government said.

Public events and gatherings are suspended and Jordanians are being instructed to avoid social events including for weddings and for mourning.

Prayers at mosques and churches are suspended. The Friday prayers will instead be broadcast on TV, the government said.

Archaeological sites will be closed for a week to allow for sterilisation.

Shisha will also be banned.
