Saudi photographer Ahmed Al Maleh documented stone mantles in the Asir plains in southern Saudi Arabia.

Al Maleh, who is interested in archeology and urban heritage and a member of the International Photographic Union, told Al Arabiya.net: “Several sites of stone mantels have been documented in the eastern plains of the Asir region and near the Turib Governorate, which contains several well-designed geometric shapes.”

He explained that the stone mantels are one of the historical evidence that goes back thousands of years, and they are numerous and varied in shapes, functions and time periods in which they were created.

He said that it is possible that these mantles located in Asir are ancient burials, adding that there are similarities to them and in the same form in the governorate of Wadi Al-Dawasir.” He also clarified that the mantels in general date back almost to the early Bronze Age of the second millennium BC.

He explained that the stone niches are different geometric shapes made up of stones that are of several patterns, some of which are in the form of an empty circle from which a straight line emerges, and are similar in shape to a “food ladle” or tombs. The other pattern is in the form of an empty triangle from which a straight line of built stones emerges, and the Malih family likened this pattern to “stone triangles”.

He pointed out that the sizes of the mantles differ from each other according to their locations and the availability of stones. He continued, “The mantels are built from huge, heavy rocks and are planted in the ground,” noting that “the height of the mantels differs from each other according to the availability of stones, as it ranges between 80 and 100 centimeters. As for their length, they are often half a kilometer, and sometimes their extension reaches two kilometers.” .

Al Maleh concluded his speech by saying: “The shapes of these satellites are evident through aerial photography, which shows them completely.”
