Vuelta 2020: Tim Wellens leads Lotto Soudal

We already knew that Tim Wellens would start in the Vuelta a España. Now Lotto Soudal has announced the final selection for the Spanish round. The WorldTour team is counting on seven Belgians and a Pole.

Wellens will also participate in the Tour of Flanders two days before the start of the Tour of Spain in Irún, Basque. This combination is possible because the Belgian has received permission from the UCI to have the mandatory blood test for the Vuelta carried out in Belgium.

2020 is not the best season of his career for 29-year-old Wellens, but the stage hijacker and hill specialist definitely wants to drive another big lap this year. “To end the season with a good feeling”, said Wellens, who will be joined by Stan Dewulf, Kobe Goossens, Tomasz Marczynski, Rémy Mertz, Brent Van Moer, Tosh Van der Sande and Gerben Thijssen.

For Dewulf, Van Moer, Goossens and Thijssen, the Vuelta is the first big round of their still early career. Mertz already rode the Vuelta once, Van der Sande and Marczynski know the tricks of the trade. Mertz, Van der Sande and Marczynski have to leave Lotto Soudal and can still be in the spotlight with other teams in the Vuelta.
