Monterrey won its first victory in the new season of the Mexican Football League and beat Necaxa 4-0 on Friday evening (Saturday morning GMT) in the second round of the competition.
Monterrey had started the season with a goalless draw with Queretaro, but won the second match and beat Necaxa with four clean goals scored by Rogelio Funes Mori, Maximiliano Mesa, Dovan Vergara and Jesus Gallardo in the fourth, 23, 44 and 67 minutes.
Monterrey is expected to face Al-Ahly on February 5 in the quarter-finals of the Club World Cup, and the winner qualifies to face South American champion Palmeiras in the semi-finals.
Monterrey is left to play a match on the 23rd of this month against Cruz Azul, before facing Al-Ahly next month.
