Google’s old Chromecast supported by your phone has supported iPlayer for years. However, the Android TV platform received minimal support from the BBC, just an app from Nvidia that disappeared almost a year ago.
A Reddit user from the UK managed to get their hands on a Chromecast with Google TV a little earlier and discovered that the BBC iPlayer app is available for download from the Google Play Store. The app appears fully functional in its demo below and has a different user interface than the older app made by Nvidia. It is also noteworthy that the “NowTV” app from Sky also works on Chromecast but is not yet fully loaded.
Update 16.10.: The BBC has now officially listed the iPlayer app with support for Google TV in the new Chromecast. At the moment, this seems to be the only device that supports iPlayer. Android police found that it is not showing up in the UK Play Store for devices like the Nvidia Shield or the Xiaomi Mi Box.
It seems possible that this new iPlayer app will be widely available for Android TV and Google TV, but for now we can only speculate. It’s also entirely possible that Google simply pushed for the BBC’s iPlayer app to be built for Chromecast in order to maintain parity with previous models. In any case, this is a good sign!
Chromecast with Google TV will officially launch in the UK on Friday October 16.
