Fly over the giant Jupiter as if you were there with...

Nelly Lesage – October 17, 2020 – Sciences

The Juno probe made a close flyby of Jupiter for the 27th time last June. The images obtained on this occasion were used in a superb video. Discover this overview (almost) as if you were there.

The Juno probe has been in orbit around Jupiter for four years. The space mission, developed by NASA, aims to better understand how the gaseous planet was formed. We owe him superb images of the star. Thanks to a new video, presented by NASA on October 8, 2020 and created from the snapshots taken by the probe, it is now possible to discover what a flyby of Jupiter looks like – almost as if you were there.

The images were taken during Juno’s 27th close flyby of Jupiter, which took place on June 2, 2020. Closer during this flyby, the probe was 3,400 kilometers above the clouds of the gas giant . At this height, the gravitational pull of Jupiter had a significant effect on the speed of the probe, causing it to accelerate to 209,000 kilometers per hour (relative to the planet).

41 images immortalized by JunoCam

We owe the creation of this video to Kevin M. Gill, software engineer and artist specializing in visualizing scientific data. You can admire on Flickr his many creations, made from images captured by probes, which allow you to explore various corners of the solar system. Several of his albums are devoted to Jupiter, like this one containing only images of his Great Red Spot. You may have already seen some of Kevin M. Gill’s visuals, which he makes available under a Creative Commons license, in articles from Numerama.

Here, it is in the data of the JunoCam instrument that the artist went to draw to make us relive the flyby of Jupiter. This color camera works in visible light. The sequence is a combination of 41 images taken by JunoCam, projected onto a sphere.

Note that you too can access the raw images obtained by JunoCam, on the NASA site dedicated to the Juno mission. Images reworked by Internet users are also available there.
