More than 200 doctors in Dubai have been granted a 10-year golden residency visa for their work to protect the emirate against Covid-19.

The order was made by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, on Wednesday, in appreciation for the healthcare workers' efforts.

The 212 doctors - both male and female - work specifically with Covid-19 patients across hospitals in Dubai.

Sheikh Mohammed expressed his appreciation of all medical and administrative staff for their work on the frontlines of the virus.

"These efforts represent a main pillar of the process to combat and contain the virus," a statement from Dubai Media Office read.

Humaid Al Qatami, director general of Dubai Health Authority, thanked Sheikh Mohammed on behalf of the medics, saying that the visa would offer a morale boost for staff who have been encouraged by the leadership's praise.

Coronavirus outbreak

Mr Al Qatami echoed Sheikh Mohammed's sentiments, saying medical staff across the emirate had done themselves proud in their hard work to combat the virus and treat those infected.

"Everyone has shown a tremendous amount of flexibility by working for long hours, and even days without interruption, to confirm curb the spread of the virus and heal those who are sick without fear of contracting the virus themselves," he said.

The golden card is a long-term residency scheme, announced by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid last year, that aims to boost the investment of entrepreneurs, businessmen, doctors, foreign investors and other specialists.

Sheikh Mohammed announced last May that 6,800 investors and residents – worth an estimated Dh100 billion and from 70 countries – were chosen to receive the visa.
